Introduction

The intention is to create a smart model for artificial breathing based on hospital and ambulance equipment reverse engineering, this device would have the same functions of a full graphic display hospital device, it connects to an app to control the volume, flow and other aspects of respiration process. The device works with a Bluetooth module, which enables the connection with an android smartphone, where is possible to see on the sreen, the system integrity and a plot of the patient's inhalation and exhalation cycles, send advice to a list of registered phone numbers when an irregular behavior is detected between the patient and the machine. - message : This is a project to contribute with the critical situation and the amount of systems are needed at hospitals and the need of these at home quarantined people.

Development Objectives

Patient recovery scenario

The objective is to generate a model of a low cost ventilation medical equipment, these systems are actually in demand to assist the healing process of people affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. The device has to be built with easy to find materials and basic electrónic components in order to make it easy and fast to constuct.

Equipment Analysis

The function of an artificial breathing system is to help the patient to keep feeding the lungs with oxygen and acts as an external pulmonary system, as we can see in the image 1 we can see the block diagram of the basic components, it should be able to generate a controlled flow of air and a controlled suction patterns to emulate the normal respiratory process of inhalation/exhalation process in the patient.

There are many ways to manipulate and direct air flow to somebody's pulmonary system, a common ventilator machine is loaded with an electromechanic actuator that pushes and suction the air directly from the body, some filters and accessories are used depending on the patient situation, the output air flow of the machine cross through some sensors to keep the machine aware of the patient breath behavior along time, usually this machines have a full graphic screen to visualize the breath repetitions per minute, volume, pressure etc. The machine has an electronic card to process and control the components inside.

Prototype Design

There are some different designs to emulate a respiratory process out of the body, this machine in particular works with a couple of handmade plastic bellows, this components have a variable interior volume by extending or compressing it, to know the proper dimensions of the bellows for an universal ventilator able to provide oxygen to any person (average 6l of air) a simulation of different bellows was done (image 1).
